चरक- श्वासहर वर्ग, अंगमर्द प्रशमन, विषघ्न वर्ग
सुश्रुत- ऐलादी गण, पिप्पल्यादि गण
भावप्रकाश-

Synoyms

कोरंगी -Ela grown in South India.
द्राविणी -Ela is cultivated in South Indian states.
त्रिपुटा -Fruit is tringular shaped and has three surface.
निष्कुटि -Seeds are enclosed by leathery layer appears like a pouch.
बहुला -Fruit has many seeds.
उपकुंजिका -Fruit are contracted.
बहुलगंधा -Ela has strong and pleasant odour.

Habit

Herbaceous Plant with woody root stock.

Habitat

Cultivated in many parts of south Indian states like Karnataka, Kerala and Tamilnadu.

Morphology

  • Stem - 5-8 ft. high, clothed below with spongy sheaths.
  • Leaves- Sub sessile, 30-60 cm long, 7.5 cm wide, oblong lanceolate.
  • Flowers- Panicles,30-60 cm long, Bracts are linear-oblong.
  • Fruits- Capsule, sub-globose or oblong about 1.3 cm.
  • Seeds- Many small and black.

Chemical Composition

Seeds contain volatile oil (2-8 %), oil contains cineole Terpinyl acetate, Terpineol, Borneol .
